Personal data refers to data about you, such as your name, NRIC number, photographs, address etc. In our daily lives, we provide our personal data to many organisations. Whether you are applying for credit card, joining a gym membership or participating in a lucky draw.

The Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) is established to ensure good management of personal data by organisations and to give you greater control over your personal data. By doing so, it will strengthen the trust between you and the organisations that you engage with.

The PDPA also provides for the setting up of a national Do Not Call (DNC) Registry, which allows you to register and to opt-out from receiving telemarketing messages to your telephone number. The DNC Provisions will come into effect on 2 January 2014 and the rest of the Act will come into effect on 2 July 2014.

The talk will prepare you for the Act by giving you an overview of the PDPA and the DNC Registry, and give you tips on what you can do to protect your own personal data.
