Marketing Messages

Sign up with the Do Not Call (DNC) Registry to opt out of unwanted marketing messages or calls to your Singapore telephone number.
You may list your Singapore telephone number in any of the three DNC Registers.

Do note that the DNC Registry does not cover:

Marketing messages or calls from organisations with whom you have an ongoing relationship, if the messages are about products or services that are relevant to you. However, you may opt out from receiving such telemarketing messages and the organisation must stop sending such messages to your Singapore telephone number after 21 calendar days;
Messages that are part of a market survey or research;
Messages related to charitable or religious causes;
Personal messages sent by individuals;
Public messages sent by government agencies;
Political messages; or
Telemarketing calls or messages sent to a business (i.e. B2B).

Unlicensed Money Lending Messages

Licensed moneylenders can only advertise on their website and business premises. If you receive suspicious SMSes or WhatsApp messages from loansharks:

a) Do not reply or interact with the sender.
b) Notify the Police via i-Witness, or call the Police hotline at 1800-255-0000.
c) Call the anti-scam hotline at 1799.
d) Report the number as “spam” and block it.

Robo Calls

Do not answer calls from unknown numbers.
If you happen to answer such a call, hang up immediately. Do not reply to any question or respond to instructions to press any button on your phone.
Never give out personal data such as your NRIC number, bank account number or any other identifying information in response to unexpected or suspicious calls.
If you get a call from someone who says they represent a company or a government agency, verify the authenticity of the call. Hang up and call the organisation’s phone number on your account statement or the organisation’s website.
Do not divulge information under pressure.

Tools Available

The ScamShield app blocks known scam callers in a list managed by National Crime Prevention Council and the Police. It also uses an on-device algorithm to filter SMSes sent by unknown persons to the junk folder.
Consider using other third party apps with similar functions to block unwanted calls and messages, e.g. Messages and Phone by Google, Calls Blacklist, Hiya, Call Control.
